For the first Five readers who respond with the word MayDay- we offer to you a tiny little tomato plant!J We love our tomatoes around here, and believe that everyone should have their own home garden, no matter how big or small. So whether it helps to start your garden, or is just a nice little addition to it, there’s a bright and shining ‘Celebrity’ tomato waiting to be the Star of your day!

Health & Wellness:

This is the perfect time to discuss the health benefits of, you guessed it… Tomatoes!! Not only do they offer several benefits regarding cardiovascular health, such as helping prevent heart attack and stroke and lowering LDL cholesterol levels, as well as lowering the incidences of prostate, lung, and stomach cancers. But they may also help the skin by helping to protect it from sunburns. Tomatoes are a major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many of these health benefits. They are also a great source of vitamin c, potassium, folate, and vitamin k. But beware, most commercially sold tomatoes are harvested while still green and an ethylene gas is used to ripen them- which results in a nearly tasteless, chemically-treated fruit/veggie. Therefore, it is always best to buy locally grown, organic, vine-ripened tomatoes to get the most out of these health benefits. And nothing is fresher than straight from your own garden… or ours!J
